Contracts is a PvP online card game that aims to mix well known and innovative elements to create a fun and strategic game that everyone can enjoy, from the casual player that logs in every now and then to the competitive player that aims for the top of the ladder.
The Kickstarter for Contracts will launch in the first half of May and at the same time we will release a free demo for everyone to try out. This page is pretty much a mirror for the Kickstarter, we created it mainly because Kickstarter itself only supports campaigns in a single language, but right now it also lets you know a bit earlier the rewards the will be available when the campaign launches. The gameplay
In Contracts you extract the mana from the atmosphere and use it as ink to stipulate contracts with the creatures you summon to your aid in battle. At the start of each turn you will place a new extractor, capable of generating one unit of mana each turn. Which means you will have one mana at your disposal on the first turn, two mana on your second turn and so on. Many card game players will be familiar with such mechanics.

In Contracts si estrae il mana dall’atmosfera e lo si usa come inchiostro per redigere contratti con varie creature che si potranno poi evocare in battaglia. All’inizio di ogni turno si piazzerà un nuovo estrattore che genererà un’unità di mana ogni turno. Questo vuol dire che si avrà a disposizione un mana il primo turno, due mana il secondo turno e così via. Questa meccanica risulterà familiare a molti giocatori.
But the mana in the atmosphere can retain elemental properties for a short time, which means that when placing an extractor you will be able to choose between three different elements to imbue in the mana. Different contracts will require different elements in the mana. Will you focus on one element in order to have consistency and flexibility, and to always be able to use the contracts in your hand? Or will you harvest different elements, in order to be able to choose from a wider array of contracts? Contracts that require mana of multiple elements also exist and they are more powerful than other contracts, but will require careful planning to be used efficiently.
Your elemental choices will also give information to your opponent about your future plans, and will give him time to prepare. Which is why every now and then you may want to shake up your plans… you can use specific cards to instantly change the elements you are getting from your extractors, surprising your opponent. Or you could even sabotage your opponent’s extractors, leaving them with mana of an element they can’t fully utilize.
Tuttavia, il mana nell’atmosfera può mantenere le sue proprietà elementali per un breve periodo, quindi quando si piazza un estrattore si potrà scegliere tra tre diversi elementi da infondere nel mana. Contratti diversi richiederanno elementi diversi per essere giocati. Vuoi concentrarti su un solo elemento per essere più consistente e flessibile e per essere sempre in grado di giocare i contratti che hai in mano? Gli elementi che sceglierai daranno informazioni al tuo avversario sui tuoi piani futuri, quindi avrà tempo di prepararsi. Per questo a volte potresti voler cambiare improvvisamente i tuoi piani… puoi usare apposite carte per cambiare istantaneamente gli elementi forniti dai tuoi estrattori, cogliendo il tuo avversario di sorpresa. Oppure potresti sabotare gli estrattori del tuo avversario, lasciandolo con mana di un elemento che non riesce ad utilizzare.
If you can’t fully utilize your mana, fear not: it can be stored, though it will lose its elemental properties and become pure mana. Luckily, neutral creatures exist and they can make use of any type of mana, including pure mana. These creatures are easy to summon and are the best way to use your leftover mana, but you can also purposefully store your mana to quickly summon a bigger neutral creature at the start of the match.
All of this is rounded up by the drawing system, where you can choose how many cards to turn: you can turn up to three cards, but you can only choose one to add to your hand. This adds consistency and makes it easier to play decks with mixed elements. At the same time, it influences the mana curve: even aggressive decks that want to close the game quickly can afford to run a few cards with mid-high cost to close out the game, without losing consistency in the first few turns.

Se non riesci ad utilizzare tutto il tuo mana, non è un problema: può essere conservato, anche se perderà le sue proprietà elementali e diventerà mana puro. Fortunatamente, esistono creature neutrali che possono sfruttare qualsiasi tipo di mana, incluso il mana puro. Queste creature sono facili da evocare e sono il modo migliore per utilizzare il mana avanzato, ma puoi anche conservare il tuo mana di proposito per evocare più velocemente una potente creatura neutrale nei primi turni della partita.

A balanced meta is a healthy meta
Anyone who has played card games for a long time is familiar with filler cards: cards that have never been played and never will be, either because they are the worse version of a different card or because they are simply too weak compared to the rest. While we can’t promise that every single contract will have interesting, spectacular effects, we do aim to create a game where even the most unremarkable vanilla contract will be seen in action.
The great advantage of online card games is that once printed, a card can still be modified, and we intend to take full advantage of this feature. We want to regularly review the performance of our cards and slightly tweak them based on usage rates and win percentages. Not only is a varied meta more fun, but periodic small buffs and nerfs will keep the game fresh and stimulating between expansions.
Un meta bilanciato è un meta sano
Chiunque abbia giocato per molto tempo a giochi di carte collezionabili sarà familiare con le carte filler: carte che non sono mai state utilizzate e mai lo saranno, perché sono la versione peggiore di un’altra carta oppure perché semplicemente sono troppo deboli. Non possiamo promettere che ogni contratto avrà effetti spettacolari e interessati, ma faremo del nostro meglio per creare un gioco in cui anche il contratto più semplice si potrà utilizzare con successo.
Il grande vantaggio di un gioco di carte online è che anche dopo aver rilasciato una carta la si può ancora modificare e abbiamo intenzione di sfruttare al massimo questa possibilità. Vogliamo esaminare regolarmente la performance delle nostre carte e perfezionarle basandoci sulle percentuali di utilizzo e di vittoria. Non solo un meta vario è più divertente, ma piccoli buff e nerf periodici manterranno il gioco sempre nuovo e divertente tra un’espansione e l’altra.
Progression and FOMO
One of joys of playing a game is slowly and constantly unlocking something new. In our case that would be new cards. Every time you unlock a new card you can modify a deck, or maybe even build a new one with a strat that you have never tried before. In the process of collecting cards, you will also find that your collection is unique, different from any other player, and that will bring you to create unique decks that fit your collection.
But while progress is fun and keeps a game fresh, we should never abuse it. FOMO (fear of missing out) is a reaction people have when they risk losing something free. They will feel uncomfortable if they don’t get all of their free rewards, because they are missing out on something they could have. Some are more susceptible to this, some are not bothered, but FOMO is often used in gacha games under the guise of dailies to retain players. This can quickly become a burden for the player that maybe doesn’t have time to login some days because he is on vacation, or he is just having fun doing anything else, but will end up logging in anyway because “i have to do my dailies”.
Progresso e FOMO
Una delle parti migliori migliori dei giochi è la sensazione di progresso che si ottiene sbloccando un po’ per volta e costantemente qualcosa di nuovo. Nel nostro caso, questo qualcosa sarebbero le nuove carte. Ogni volta che si sblocca una nuova carta si può modificare un mazzo o magari crearne uno nuovo che usa una strategia mai provata prima. Collezionando carte scoprirai che la tua collezione è unica, diversa da quella di ogni altro giocatore, e questo ti porterà a creare mazzi unici adatti alla tua collezione.
Ma anche se il progresso graduale è divertente e permette di godersi un gioco più a lungo, non bisogna abusarne. La FOMO (fear of missing out, paura di perdersi qualcosa) è una reazione che le persone hanno quando rischiano di non ottenere qualcosa di gratuito. Si sentiranno a disagio se non otterranno tutte le ricompense gratuite, perché si stanno perdendo qualcosa che avrebbero potuto avere. Alcune persone sono più sensibili di altre a questa sensazione, ma in ogni caso la FOMO è spesso usata nei giochi gacha sotto forma di missioni giornaliere per non perdere utenti. Questo può rapidamente diventare un peso per il giocatore che magari non avrebbe tempo di loggare alcuni giorni perché è in vacanza, oppure si sta divertendo con qualcos’altro, ma alla fine logga lo stesso perché “devo fare le missioni giornaliere”.
There needs to be a balance, so that players can experience progression but playing the game doesn’t turn into a chore. Our idea to solve this problem is that every day you will unlock new missions that will guarantee unlocking at least one new card, so that you have something new to try. But you will unlock these missions even if you don’t login and you can accumulate them, up to seven days worth of missions. Which means you can avoid logging in at all for a week, then come back and you won’t have missed out on anything. Dailies also present a different problem: they consume time. Sometimes, when you only have 20 minutes to dedicate to your favorite game, you log in, do your dailies, and then… close the game, without really having any fun, because the 20 minutes are gone. We don’t want that, which is why our daily missions will leave you complete freedom and only require you to win games against human opponents, without restricting which deck you can use or the game mode. You will simply complete them by playing.
Deve esserci un equilibrio in modo tale che i giocatori possano progredire nel gioco senza che questo diventi un lavoro. La nostra idea per risolvere questo problema è che ogni giorno il giocatore sbloccherà nuove missioni che garantiranno di sbloccare almeno una nuova carta, in modo da avere qualcosa di nuovo da provare. Queste missioni si sbloccheranno anche se il giocatore non aprirà il gioco e sarà possibile accumulare fino a sette giorni di missioni. Quindi sarà possibile non loggare per una settimana intera senza perdere nulla. Le missioni giornaliere hanno anche un altro problema: consumano tempo. A volte quando abbiamo solo 20 minuti da dedicare al nostro gioco preferito entriamo, completiamo le missioni giornaliere e poi… chiudiamo il gioco senza esserci nemmeno divertiti, perché i 20 minuti sono passati. Questo non è ciò che vogliamo, motivo per cui le nostre missioni richiederanno semplicemente di vincere partite contro un avversario umano, senza restringere il mazzo o la modalità di gioco. Basterà giocare per completarle.
F2P friendly or pay to win?
For games to run, you need people working on it and people tend to have really bad habits like eating or living inside a house. Which is why games aren’t free, you either buy them to be able to play them or you can play them for free but there are microtransactions inside. Contracts is part of the second category.
We intend to implement a monthly card that enhances the rewards you get from missions. If/when we release story expansions, it will be possible to acquire them both using in game currency or with a microtransaction. Any other microtransaction will regard exclusively aesthetic items, like emotes, playing fields or visual enhancements for the cards.
F2P friendly o pay to win?
Per tenere in piedi un gioco servono persone che ci lavorino e le persone hanno pessime abitudini come mangiare o volere un tetto sopra la testa. Questo è il motivo per cui i giochi non sono gratuiti, o si comprano prima di poterli giocare oppure si possono giocare gratuitamente, ma all’interno contengono microtransazioni. Contracts farà parte della seconda categoria.
Abbiamo intenzione di fornire un pass mensile che aumenterà le ricompense delle missioni. Tutte le altre microtransazioni riguarderanno oggetti esclusivamente estetici, come le emote, i campi di gioco o immagini alternative per le carte.
We think this is a nice compromise: it lets willing players collect cards a bit faster, while avoiding whales owning all the cards on day one. In our experience, this is usually deleterious for everyone, including the whales themselves that quickly get bored because they immediately try out everything. If anyone wants to support the game more, we will release beautiful aesthetic upgrades.
Pensiamo che questo sia un buon compromesso: permette ai giocatori che vogliono farlo di ottenere le carte un po’ più velocemente, ma impedisce alle “whale” (i giocatori con una disponibilità di spesa molto elevata) di ottenere tutte le carte immediatamente. Questo infatti non sarebbe un bene per nessuno, nemmeno per le whale stesse che presto inizierebbero ad annoiarsi perché avrebbero provato tutto subito. Per chi volesse supportare di più il gioco, rilasceremo fantastici miglioramenti estetici.

Al momento stiamo lavorando a questo progetto con un gigantesco team di… due persone. Ci stiamo dedicando tempo e lavoro, ma c’è un limite a ciò che possiamo fare. In particolare, uno degli elementi principali di un gioco di carte sono le carte stesse e queste hanno bisogno di immagini, una per ogni carta solitamente. I am now 100% sure you don’t want me to draw them. We considered using AI art, but decided we wanted to work with an artist to bring out the best possible products. Because of the high number of cards, this is by far our main expense at the moment and the reason we are gathering funds.

Timeline
This is our first time attempting a similar project so we ask you to be understanding of the fact that the following timeline is an estimate. We will keep this updated as often as possible, both here and on other socials. You can follow our Telegram channel for the latest news or sometimes we stream the latest changes here.
We plan to get to the finished game in 4 steps. The first step will be an offline demo distributed freely. It will contain a tutorial composed of 4 different fights, with some optional achievements/puzzles. This will allow the players to experience the game for themselves, at the same time allowing us to test the implementation of all the mechanics in the game. The script for the demo is ready and the program is coming along nicely, we will release it when the Kickstarter starts in May. We will later add a fifth stage to the demo.
The second step will be the beta, where we will invite players to try the game and play online. This will allow us to test the solidity of our online communication system. At the same time, we will use the data from this beta to run a first round of balancing on the cards. We plan to release this around five months after the end of the Kickstarter, so around the start of November.
Close to the actual release, a short test to check if the laddering and mission systems are working properly.

Tempistiche
Questo è il nostro primo tentativo con un progetto del genere quindi siamo soltanto in grado di fornire una stima delle tempistiche. Forniremo aggiornamenti ogni volta che ci saranno novità sia qui che sugli altri social. Pianifichiamo di arrivare al rilascio del gioco tramite 4 passi. Il primo passo sarà una demo offline distribuita gratuitamente. Conterrà un tutorial diviso in 4 partite con alcuni obiettivi/puzzle opzionali. Questo permetterà ai giocatori di provare il gioco ed allo stesso tempo per noi sarà il banco di prova per la corretta implementazione delle meccaniche del gioco. Il copione per la demo è pronto e la programmazione è a buon punto, quindi la rilasceremo a maggio a tempo al lancio del Kickstarter. Successivamente aggiungeremo un quinto stage alla demo.
Il secondo passo sarà un beta test in cui inviteremo un certo numero di giocatori a provare il gioco e giocare online. Questo ci permetterà di testare la solidità del nostro sistema di comunicazione online e useremo i dati di questo test per bilanciare le carte. Pianifichiamo di iniziare la beta circa 5 mesi dopo la fine del Kickstarter, cioè a novembre.
Poco prima del rilascio, faremo un rapido test per controllare che il sistema delle missioni e il punteggio della modalità classificata funzionino.
Infine avremo il rilascio verso l’inizio di Febbraio 2025.

The timeline above assumes we will be working full time on the project. This should be possible thanks to the kickstarter and some more external funds we are likely to receive from other sources. There is still a small possibility that this won't be possible though, if we fail to receive the extra funds and the kickstarter barely hits the objective. In that case, we won't be able to work on Contracts full time, and that will slow down the development.
The objective we set for this Kickstarter covers everything needed for the game that we can't make ourselves (art, physical components for the Kickstarter rewards) plus taxes and the cost of setting up a business. This means that as long as we hit the minimum objective, we will surely be able to deliver the game, in the worst case scenario it will just take a bit longer.
Rischi
Le tempistiche esposte sopra suppongono che noi lavoriamo a tempo pieno al progetto. Questo dovrebbe essere possibile grazie al Kickstarter e ad altri fondi esterni che dovremmo ricevere da altre fonti. Esiste comunque una possibilità che questo non sarà possibile, in caso non riuscissimo a ottenere i fondi aggiuntivi e il Kickstarter raggiungesse solo l’obiettivo base. In quel caso potremmo non riuscire a dedicare tutto il nostro tempo a Contracts, e questo rallenterebbe lo sviluppo.
In compenso non esiste il rischio che lo sviluppo fallisca. L’obiettivo che abbiamo scelto per questo Kickstarter copre tutto ciò che non possiamo realizzare da soli (arte, componenti fisici per le ricompense di Kickstarter) più tutte le tasse che dovremo pagare e i costi legali per mettere su un’attività. Questo significa che una volta raggiunto l’obiettivo del Kickstarter, siamo sicuri di riuscire a rilasciare il gioco, nel caso peggiore con un po’ di ritardo.

Here you will get physical cards that you can use to play with your friends. The box you will receive will contain 4 decks of cards. These decks will be chosen between the decks that perform best in the first month of the game. You can use them as they are or build your own deck. The box will also contain extractors, mana tanks, tokens to keep track of damage and similar things. In total, there will be 130 pieces made of wooden material.
This tier will also give you the "Cornerstone" Discord role, guaranteed access to the beta and your name will be in the credits.

This tier contains similar perks to the "Naming sense" tier, with two key differences.
The first one, you will always have the monthly card active on your account, as long as the servers for Contracts are open.
Second, instead of only naming a character, you will also be able to give them your face (or the face of someone you hold dear). When we create the first story expansion for Contracts, we will let you choose one of the enemies the players will have to face: send us your photo and we will model the boss after your appearance. You will also be able to choose their name.
